Malicious system firmware attacks are on the rise.\u202fThe March 2021 Microsoft commissioned Security Signals<\/a> report showed that more than 80% of enterprises had experienced at least one firmware attack through 2019 and 2020.\u202f As Azim Shafqat, Partner at ISG and Former Managing VP at Gartner once said, \u201cThere are two types of companies \u2013 those who have experienced a firmware attack, and those who have experienced a firmware attack but don\u2019t know it.\u201d\u202f Securing against these firmware attacks<\/a> while avoiding downtime requires a robust firmware resiliency solution.<\/p>\n

AMI Tektagon\u2122 Answers the Call <\/em><\/h6>\n

Platform Root of Trust (PRoT) solutions, like AMI Tektagon XFR<\/a>, enabled by the low-power Lattice\u2122 Mach-NX<\/a> Hardware Root of Trust FPGA can add platform firmware resiliency. However, the effort to implement a PRoT solution is not trivial.\u202f Combine that with the hurdles of integrating different types of platform firmware with the compatibility necessary to initialize the host silicon.\u202f Additionally, developers might be challenged to scale across multiple silicon and platform vendors. These challenges become more significant when building compatibility across different open-source firmware.<\/p>\n

What Does AMI Tektagon XFR Demo on AMD Platform Showcase?<\/em><\/h6>\n

At the Open Compute Project\u2019s Regional Summit<\/a> in Prague on April 19th and 20th, AMI and AMD will showcase the AMI Tektagon XFR running on AMI Aptio OpenEdition<\/a> UEFI open-source boot firmware using AMD 4th Gen EPYC\u2122 processor-based platform.\u202f The solution delivers detection of firmware intrusions, protection against ongoing firmware intrusions, and recovery from compromised firmware.<\/p>\n

During the demo, OCP attendees will be able to see Tektagon XFR, running on the Lattice Mach-NX FPGA perform CPU attestation using SPDM with AMI Aptio OpenEdition boot firmware.\u202f During the pre-boot phase of the platform bring-up, Tektagon will serve as the SPDM requester and issue commands to receive measurements from AMD\u2019s SoC boot images. If the values received are different from the \u201cknown good measurements\u201d, the boot process is halted.\u202f Booting will then be prevented until the firmware image is recovered and a good flash image is reported.<\/p>\n
