DULUTH, GEORGIA<\/strong> – AMI\u00ae, a global leader in powering, managing and securing the world’s connected digital infrastructure through its BIOS, BMC and security solutions, is pleased to announce that it has recently joined the OpenRAN Project Group<\/a>, an initiative driven by the Telecom Infra Project<\/a> to define and build 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G radio access network (RAN) solutions based on general-purpose vendor-neutral hardware, open interfaces and software.<\/p>\n

About the Telecom Infra Project<\/em><\/h4>\n

The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) is a global community of companies and organizations driving infrastructure solutions to advance global connectivity. Founded in 2016, TIP is a community of diverse members representing hundreds of companies, from service providers and technology partners to systems integrators and other connectivity stakeholders. TIP members work together to develop, test and deploy open, disaggregated and standards-based solutions that deliver the high-quality connectivity that the world needs \u2013 now and in the decades to come.<\/p>\n

TIP Product Groups<\/em><\/h4>\n

TIP’s Product Groups are divided into three strategic areas that collectively make up an end-to-end network – including Access, Transport, and Core and Services – to best identify areas in need of innovation and work to build the right products. Similarly, its Solution Groups aim to codify open, disaggregated, interoperable network elements, including TIP-incubated technology across all network layers, into a broad range of end-to-end solutions for specific deployment cases that can be used by operators and other connectivity stakeholders.<\/p>\n

What is a RAN?<\/em><\/h4>\n

In general terms, a RAN facilitates radio connections for wireless devices such as mobile phones to a cellular network via LTE or 5G connectivity. With the gradual global rollout of 5G connectivity, RANs have evolved to be more flexible and support a wider range of use cases than previous generations, as well as more secure and capable of delivering the reduced operating cost and lower latency that makes 5G so promising.<\/p>\n

The OpenRAN Project Group in Detail<\/em><\/h4>\n

As a TIP project group, OpenRAN\u2019s mission is to accelerate innovation and commercialization in the RAN domain with multi-vendor interoperable products and solutions that are easy to integrate into operator networks and verified for varied deployment scenarios. For these reasons, TIP\u2019s OpenRAN program supports the development of disaggregated and interoperable 2G\/3G\/4G\/5G NR Radio Access Network solutions based on specific service provider requirements.<\/p>\n

OpenRAN also features several component subgroups covering a wide range of 5G RAN topics and technical challenges including whitebox hardware designs for radio units (RU), distributed units (DU) and centralized units (CU), RAN Intelligence & Automation (RIA), as well as Open RAN Outdoor Macro and Indoor 5G NR Small Cell reference architectures and solution development. Participants in the OpenRAN Project Group include key telecom and computing industry leaders including BT, Intel, T-Mobile, Vodafone and many others.<\/p>\n
